What is Varicella?

Varicella is one of the most common contagious diseases in children. It is caused by the virus varicella-zoster.
The symptoms of varicella include: fever, weakness, and after a few days-rash.

The rash usually starts on the chest, back, face, skull, and then spreads to the extremities. Occasionally there are also lesions in the mouth, eyelids or diaper area. The rash usually begins as a small red raised lesion, that then become a fluid-filled bubble. At first the fluid is clear and after a brief time, it becomes pustular. Eventually these lesions scab over. Usually the lesions come in waves lasting 4-5 days, and before each wave there is fever.
